i think they provide financial backing to the gnu project? and they host libreplanet every year? but like... is that it?? their most recent news post has a quote from their new president about his goals for the fsf, where he says, I aim to strengthen the FSF's ability to combat new threats to computer user freedom, as well as welcome more free software supporters into the movement than ever before.
that's such a nothing statement, tf does strengthen the FSF's ability to combat new threats to computer user freedom
even mean?
(the same post also talks about a new project called the "LibrePhone" which is hilarious, like part of me feels like i'm being too mean here but i just can't even pretend to take that seriously lmfao)
and their "about" page doesn't look any better. it explains what free software is, describes some of their "core work" as publishing the GPL (something they haven't done since 2007), holding copyrights on "the GNU operating system" and "other free software", and "campaigning" for free software adoption
their "campaigns" page lists a bunch of stuff, and i guarantee not a single one of those campaigns has accomplished anything meaningful. one of them is "PlayOgg", which promotes the usage of free audio/video formats rather than formats like mp3 "whose patent problems threaten free software and hinder progress", which is funny because all mp3 patents expired in 2017. other campaigns like "Free JavaScript" and "Upgrade from Windows" are, well, exactly what they sound like, and they've been exactly as successful as you'd expect them to be, which is honestly kinda pathetic coming from the organization that people donate to to "support free software"
like i don't want to say that the only thing the fsf does is write blog posts pandering to people who already support them while being deluded into believing that they're spreading their message to the general public, but i kinda feel like the only thing the fsf does is write blog posts pandering to people who already support them while being deluded into believing that they're spreading their message to the general public
am i missing something here??
